I never normally mess with headers/footers at all. Navigate to the Header & Footer panel and select Link to Previous to disable the link. It's as if maybe somehow the text and pictures are stuck in a giant header that is taking up the whole of the first page and can't easily be edited at the same time as the rest of the document can. I notice now that the cursor is actually going to the bottom of the page Here is an example, see header and footer mode is closed but the image is greyed out and the cursor if it's even there, isn't going within or before the text above the circle picture, even when I click in that text. To edit, double click by your name or page number to open the design tab. Then when I double click in the document, I get the cursor and the image is no longer greyed out but I am in that header footer mode again. Close the Header and Footer Tools Design tab by clicking Close Header & Footer tab. If it doesn't work, please post a comment and I'll delete the answer. Then though what happens is the image I have in my document gets greyed out and I see no cursor. Clicking on Insert > Header > Edit Header takes you to the header area where you can design your own header. It has been pointed out in comment that I can click that "tab" where it says header and footer tools, and then I can click "close". I don't yet know how it went into that mode. After deleting the header content, the header itself will. Then select all the content in the header and hit the delete key. Another way to delete header in Word is to double-click on the header area to make it editable. Option 2: Clear all the header content to remove the header in Word. As a result, the view changes from Page Layout to Normal, and you no longer see the header and footer. This is how you may exit headers in Microsoft Word. In the Ribbon, go to View > Workbook Views > Normal. Once you’re done editing the header/footer, click anywhere on the worksheet to leave the header or footer area. Note- If I create a new document it's not in the new one To close the header and footer after adding or editing them, follow these steps: 1. I've been using Ms Word 2013 for a while, and suddenly in one of my documents, this has appeared.(See pic below)
